Badly Behaving Social Network Breaks Own Cardinal Rule: NEVER Delete a Book

Goodreads has one rule above all others:

NEVER delete a unique book from the database. No matter what, especially if it’s been shelved and reviewed.

They broke their own rule.

Latest Censorship News: Goodreads Can’t Take Criticism, Badly Behaved Social Network?

Taking censorship to a new level…

(1) Reviews are being deleted for being “potentially off-topic” – code for “being critical of GR”:

Let’s add another thing to the list of mind reading that GR is doing. They already sent me an email telling me a list of my reviews they would delete for being about the author. I changed all of them to a generic message that there should be a review there but it’s been censored by GR because reader’s minds are just too fragile to handle anything that is not strictly about the book.

Now, by my definition, that is not about the author. Yet, I just got an email from GR that they were deleted. Ahhhh, the double standards are awesome aren’t they?

What Goodreads Meant to Me

I spent months lurking on Goodreads before I eventually joined in 2009, but once I did, I was hooked. Money drained from my account and into Amazon’s as my reading appetites increased exponentially. Connecting with other “weird” people who loved books as much as I did helped me enormously, having never heard of the term ‘introvert’ before. I’d finally found my tribe, my people. People who rarely failed to bring a smile to my face and never looked down on me for being a geek. ‘Reading’ and ‘Goodreads’ quickly became synonymous with ‘freedom’, ‘escape’, and ‘relax’.

Paradise, thy name was Goodreads.

Thousands of comments and questions have mostly gone unanswered, leaving users confused, angry and frustrated, partly because this policy appears to have been inconsistently applied. Ironically, this change in policy was implemented just a couple of days before Banned Books Week.
